About Dr. Joseph

I am a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in Washington, D.C., providing therapy to people age 12 and up. I may be an ideal therapist for people feeling stuck in their relationships or careers, people who have tried therapy before but failed to benefit, and people whose symptoms have not responded to medications. I also specialize in the treatment of medically-unexplained physical symptoms. I strive to collaboratively build a therapy relationship in which you will feel supported and challenged so you can achieve your therapy goals. My style as a therapist combines my caring, warmth, and persistence with my expert knowledge of human emotional functioning. My greatest strength as a therapist is my ability to rapidly help people to recognize and overcome the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that hold them back from the life they desire. My extensive training in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy and other psychoanalytic models of therapy support my effectiveness as a generalist practitioner and with my unique specialties.

I received my PsyD from George Washington University’s APA-accredited Professional Psychology Program in 2015 after completing the APA-accredited internship at University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s counseling center. During my graduate training I worked in high school, college counseling, community mental health, and retirement community settings. Prior to graduate school I received my BA in Psychology and Sociology from Dickinson College in 2009, and worked in psychiatric hospital settings as a researcher and caseworker during and after college.

While in graduate school I participated in advanced training in Intensive-Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy by completing the 3-year certificate program in ISTDP program at the Washington School of Psychiatry, where I now serve on the faculty. I am currently participating in an Advanced Core Training in ISTDP led by Jon Frederickson, MSW.

I am an Adjunct Faculty member, teaching about psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Washington, DC, an APA-accredited psychology doctoral training program.

In addition to my intensive training in ISTDP, I have also participated in psychoanalytic fellowships with the Contemporary Freudian Society, Baltimore-Washington Institute for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, and the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis.
